Society nowadays sets a standard that some of us can’t reach - having clear, blemish-free, and vibrant skin.

Growing up, I didn’t have clear skin. I was always envious of girls who have crystal clear skin. While all I can do is cover it up with make-up. This vulnerability is one of my biggest sources of insecurity.

It wasn’t until I got a pimple on my nose that I didn’t feel bad. A famous Filipino superstition says that having a pimple on your nose is a great indication of an upcoming positive experience of love. It holds different meanings and interpretations across various cultures, but I didn’t believe any of it until now.

I slept peacefully last night, filled with hope instead of insecurity and love rather than hatred. Perhaps my insecurity is a reflection of your love, that to love me, I must endure agony and suffering

When I woke up that morning, I decided to speak my truth. But as soon as I walked into the classroom, you started making jokes. You chose to focus on my imperfections, like pointing out my pimple and commenting on my appearance.

My heart sank deep. Maybe no amount of sign and superstition can bring me close to you. Maybe for you, I’m just a girl full of delusions.

I hope someday, when I get another pimple on my nose, it will be a sign of pure love and acceptance within myself. I hope it will be a sign of confidence and deep affection, knowing that someone will accept me for who I am, not just because of my appearance.
